Formed as the Blue Velvets in San Francisco in 1959, nowhere near the Mississippi delta that Fogerty so liked to sing about, they became the Golliwogs on signing to Fantasy records in 1964. While the music of CCR dominated America’s singles and album charts, not to mention radio-waves, from 1969 to 1971, it had taken some ten years to get that far. ![]() This was a sad end for the band that had a string of 9 million-selling singles in America in just 29 months. Rock critic Jon Landau described that final album as “ The worst album by a major group that I have ever heard!” a description with which Fogerty heartily agreed. This fact is only underlined by Fogerty’s later, though somewhat seldom solo recordings, and the fact that the band’s final studio album, Mardi Gras (known as ‘ Fogerty’s Revenge’), on which songwriting duties were split equally among the band, was a relative flop. Sole writer, arranger and producer of all the bands hits except the first (a cover of Dale Hawkins’ ‘Suzie Q’), his voice and distinctive guitar playing were the CCR trademark. Though Creedence Clearwater Revival (CCR) consisted of four members, there is absolutely no doubt that the group’s success was down to one man – John Fogerty. ![]() Recorded at Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California Proud Mary – Creedence Clearwater Revivalįantasy 619 (USA) / Liberty LBF 15223 (UK) Fogerty reckons the first 3 Creedence albums were recorded for under $2000 each!
